NCHEA will keep this page updated with any Legislative Alerts.
Dear NCHEA Members, Support Group Leaders, and Nebraska Homeschoolers,
Attached is the NCHEA's January 27, 2012 Legislative Alert by NCHEA Legislative Liaison David Lostroh.
The Alert contains a Call to Action on LB996, which deals with mandatory attendance through the age of 18. LB996 repeals an exception that allows children who have reached the age of sixteen to drop of of school if the child has written consent of their guardian or parent.
CALL TO ACTION
1. Call Education Committee members and encourage them to oppose LB996 at the committee vote. You can use some of the reasons given above during your call if you so choose.
Education Committee Members
Sen. Greg Adams, Chairperson (402) 471-2756, gadams@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Bill Avery (402) 471-2633, bavery@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Abbie Cornett (402) 471-2615, acornett@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Brenda Council (402) 471-2612, bcouncil@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Ken Haar (402) 471-2673, khaar@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Gwen Howard (402) 471-2723, ghoward@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Les Seiler (402) 471-2712, lseiler@leg.ne.gov
Sen. Kate Sullivan (402) 471-2631, ksullivan@leg.ne.gov
2. Monitor LB996 at the Nebraska Legislature’s website. If the bill passes out of Committee, call your senator and encourage him/her to vote against LB996 for the reasons given above.
DO NOT IDENTIFY YOURSELF AS A HOMESCHOOL PARENT. Since this bill applies to all schools, it is not necessary or even appropriate to identify yourself as a home school parent—this is a basic parental rights issue.
Respectfully,
David Lostroh, NCHEA Legislative Liaison
